Good Beginner
This Good Beginner class is designed to advance your child's proper swimming technique, endurance, and length of swimming. This class also emphasizes water safety. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Prior skill in swimming IS REQUIRED to enroll in this class. Children should NOT enroll in this course if they are unable and/or afraid to swim in water over their head because the instructor will encourage independent swimming in the deep end (5 feet in depth) of the pool starting with the first class and swimming 15 yard lengths of the pool will begin the first or second day of class. Children must be at least 4 years of age to be in this class AND must be able to swim a minimum of 5 yards in length in water over their head without being assisted. If you have never seen your child perform this level of swimming, please do not assume they are capable. Your child could be unwilling to participate if they are not ready for this class, so enroll in Regular Beginner instead. Students who have progressed in Regular Beginner in the past will have received a white Level 2 ribbon from us, which indicates they are already prepared to enroll in Good Beginner. However, swimming requires practice, so please consider your child's current capabilities prior to enrolling. If you need help in deciding if this class is appropriate for your child, please call 731-431-0528 to gain assistance in deciding.
Good Beginner Information
The Carmichael Swim Pool facility has a heated swimming pool to increase the comfort for your child. When participating in this class, your child will be in the pool with the instructor and other children. The goal of the class by 7th class of the session is to have children individually and independently swimming a length of 30 yards freestyle, resting for a few minutes, swimming 15 yards elementary backstroke, resting for a few minutes, survival floating for 60 seconds, resting for a few minutes, and then treading water for 30 seconds with swimming to safety at the side of the pool or to shallow water. Students who make appropriate progress in this class will be recommended to take Advance Swimming at a larger pool facility next season. Due to the physical and endurance requirements of this class, it is not unusual for students to spend more than one season in Good Beginner. Again, call 731-431-0528 if you need assistance in deciding which course to select.
